How to Make the Perfect Smoothie Bowl (+ Food Photography Tips)

smoothie_bowl_masterpiece

So, let me tell you all about my friend Falcon. For starters, she is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met. We met at a work event and quickly discovered we had more than a million things in common, so birds of a feather! She’s a plant-based yogi + photographer based in NYC who loves to travel and help inspire people to live a holistic lifestyle. If you head to her Instagram @_falconcara_ you’ll notice 1. it’s visually STUNNING and 2. she makes gorgeous smoothie bowls that will have you drooling… I mean, look:

Which brings me to this post – I’ve asked Falcon to show me her magic. We met up at her local organic market, picked up the best of the best ingredients, and headed back to her home in Brooklyn to enter smoothie bowl paradise.

How to Make the Perfect Smoothie Bowl

Falcon helped me put together this gorgeous smoothie bowl step by step. She let me take the reigns on photographing, because what better way to learn than to just do it! I am proud to say I snapped & edited all of the images below, using her pro-tips, some of which I will share with you at the end!

Step 1: Make the Base

We blended 1 cup of frozen organic blueberries with 3 fresh bananas to make it thick, but you can use one frozen banana if you prefer. (Isn’t Falcon’s wrist tat cool?)

Step 2: Prepare your toppings

To make it pretty for the photo, divide out your toppings into small dishes or bowls. We gathered fresh organic blueberries, goji berries, coconut flakes, and more bananas.

Step 3: Get ready… to garnish

Carefully lay out your ingredients layer by layer. We chose to lay it out in columns, but there are endless creative ways to decorate your smoothie bowls! Check out Falcon’s IG for inspiration, as well as a few of my other favorites: @elsas_wholesomelife, @sobeautifullyreal, & @cinnamonandberries.

Step 4: Photograph it for Instagram, of course

…Because not many people take the time to make gorgeous smoothies bowls just for their own eyes to see! I know IGers get a lot of flak for constantly taking photos of food, but remember it’s also an art. Photography is something I love, and although I’m an amateur, it feels incredible to create something with my hands and to be able to capture it!

Food Photography Tips I Learned From the Pro

  • Find Natural Light

Set up your food near a window or somewhere with even lighting. Try to avoid hard shadows or dark areas, as this will make it easier to edit and will help give your photo a clear & crisp quality.

  • Play Around with Backgrounds

You can never go wrong with a clean, white background! Once you’re comfortable, try mixing it up with different textures such as wood or marble. You can then start to introduce different props into the frame such as fruit, flowers, or even natural crystals!

  • Try Birdseye View

Don’t ask me why it works… it just does! Make sure you hold the camera straight down, so it’s doesn’t shoot at an angle.

  • Allow Negative Space

Give your food room to breath. I realize my IG gallery looks much cleaner when I’m not so zoomed in. Once I started allowing room around my subject, it started to look a hundred times better. You can always crop in later.

  • Find Your Style with Photo Editing

Everyone has their own taste, so find what resonates with you and your personal brand. Maybe you prefer a moody/high contrast vibe like @melodyjoyco or a bright/colorful vibe like @studiodiy – both are incredible! You don’t need to spend a ton of money on photo editing tools, either. There are really top-notch apps out there that will bring your photos to life. I recommend good ole Instagram editor, Snapseed, VSCO, and if you can spend money then get Adobe Lightroom. I pay $10/month for Lightroom & Photoshop via Creative Cloud.

Voilá! HUUUUUGE thanks to this radiant + beautiful gem, Falcon,  for teaching me so much in one day! I walked out of there excited to create delicious rainbows of food for my blog and experiment with more food styling/photography! Please do yourself a favor and follow her @_falconcara_ & convince her to start a holistic lifestyle blog already!!!

  • Cheers to a year of growth and learning! 📚I'm so excited to partner with @mindfreshco + enroll in their 25-hour teacher training to help bring mindfulness practices to workspaces! Through this program I hope to deepen my knowledge of mindful movement, breathing exercises, and guided meditation, so I can strengthen my skills as a yoga instructor while also helping people manage stress and gain clarity in a demanding work environment. It's a digital course, so I'm able to do this program amongst my transition to ATX! If you're a certified yoga or meditation instructor, there's still time to enroll in the upcoming training session beginning on May 1st. Check my stories for more information or visit 👉🏼 https://goo.gl/XiyYTj 〰️ perhaps I’ll see you in class? ! 😊 #omandthecity #teachMINDFRESH #MINDFRESHmoment
  • coconut yogurt with berries + @avokween's granola butter (with collagen)! Ummm, I had never heard of granola butter before, and it straight up tastes like graham crackers. Good job, @avokween. I dig it. #omandthecityeats
  • Miss Bruna found a new home, but she's not getting picked up until the weekend. So, I may or may not have snuck in some final mother/daughter portraits. 〰 despite having to let go of my plant babies, I’m ridiculously excited to go through the process of picking new plants again! #omandthecity #wellnessblogger #plantlady #urbanjunglebloggers #birdsofparadise #houseplantsofinstagram #revolveclothing
  • {Always be a student} 〰 One of my major goals this year is to deepen my knowledge, experience, and training in all things I love in wellness. From yoga, meditation, nutrition, and beyond... this is my year to invest back into myself. I'm at a transitional point in my life, where I'm ready to shift my focus and energy inwards so I can continue pouring outwards. 👉🏼👉🏼 👉🏼I've been reading a lot of posts lately where I feel a lot of you are also in some sort of transitional state. Am I right?? Tell me below if you feel this energy shift as well! It's scary not knowing what's coming next, but how exciting is it to want to expand our wings? #investinyou #womenentrepreneur #wellnessblogger #powerofshe #createcultivate #herestothecreatives
  • So many reasons to smile ☀️getting into those summer vibes, because we become residents of ATX 🌵in just ONE more week! Eeeeeee! // #ad Celebrating with an organic raspberry @solerofruitbar, made with real crushed fruit and the simplest ingredients! A summer must have. #ForTheLoveOfFruit #wellnessblogger #summervibes☀️ #plantlady #urbanjunglebloggers #atxblogger
  • YOU GUYS 🌿 all of my plants are basically gone. Except for Miss Bruna, the birds of paradise. Sadly, she’s quite large and we’d need someone with a truck to move her out 😂 hoping someone in my building would want her!
〰️
But anyways, someone at my moving sale asked me if it’s hard getting rid of all of my things, and I told her I really only care about the plants. I used to be such a clutterbug (just ask my mom to show you photos of my old room), and I felt attached to so many “things”. As I’ve moved through my minimalist journey this past year, I’ve overcome it.
〰️
More things = more anxiety for me. I’m so excited to move into a larger apartment owning less than I ever have. Although moving is a lot of work, it’s a great opportunity to purge and decide what possessions, energy, and emotions you want to bring with you. I’m leaving anything behind that doesn’t bring me joy. Cheers to constantly cleansing our lives + Happy Earth Day! Wearing @athleta’s organic cotton bra and leggings! #earthday2018 // P.S. I’m on @tastingtable’s stories today walking you through my typical weekday morning routine! So, you can take some inspo with you into Monday! ✨✨✨ #sustainableliving #omandthecity #wellnessblogger #plantlady #urbanjunglebloggers #palosanto #athleta #powerofshe
  • New York, you're not quite on Punta Cana's level yet. But, I'll take that sunny 62 degree weather you've got comin' for us this weekend!
〰
Yesterday, I filmed with @adidas x @wanderlustfest, and it was a personal dream come true. I get overwhelmed at times, I might complain about my to-do list, and the stress of packing/moving, but at the end of the day I am grateful.
〰️
Making a conscious effort this weekend to catch myself before I complain about something dumb. To keep seeing the good. To be excited for this transition. To remember the feeling of boxing up my belongings and moving to a brand new state. To feel the soreness in my body from filming dozens and dozens of takes with a brand I never thought I'd get paid to work with. #omandthecity #omandthecitytravels #revolveclothing #wellnessfitness #wellnessblogger
  • A few of my favorite things: fresh flowers🌸, sunshine☀️, and equal rights✊🏼. #ad ICYMI: Last week I posted a photo of myself with pink eyebrows in partnership with @europeanwax to raise awareness about the pink tax. You know…when companies hike up the prices on goods and services marketed towards women (i.e. clothing, dry cleaning, razors, etc.). The pink tax causes us to pay an extra $1,351 a year JUST for being a woman.
〰
So, JOIN US in raising a pink brow against The Pink Tax. How to wear pink brows? Use any makeup products you have, use @europeanwax's Snapchat lens available at axthepinktax.com, or visit your local EWC for complimentary pink brows. Share your brows and spread the word with #AxThePinkTax. Let’s do this, ladies. 💥

  • Chicadees, I'm happy to report back that my skin is clear, and dare I say, glowing? 🙌🏼🌿✨Since I quit the birth control pill back in November, my skin was experiencing some hormonal breakouts. While I accept the shifts and transitions my body is going through, it's super frustrating waking up with new uninvited pals everyday and feeling like my skin isn't reflecting the huge progress I felt on the inside since quitting the pill.
🌿
I finally decided to try @bioclarity's clear skin routine, and I am so so happy to share that it worked wonders for me! You've seen me talk about it on stories, and I know lots of you already ordered your own to try! But ICYMI, #bioClarity has a plant-based & cruelty-free skincare system geared to treat acne with the power of chlorophyll and without the harsh chemicals. Try it for yourself + get 50% off using the code: OMCITY. Please report back and let me know how it works for you! #sponsored #powerofgreen #plantbasedskincare #wellnessblogger #crueltyfreebeauty
